Gravel: For Low Maintenance Gardens

Gravels are a popular mulching material. They are aesthetically pleasing, with a clean, uniform appearance, and they are effective in many landscaping scenarios. Rock mulch landscaping is a great idea.  Take advantage of rocks, pebbles, and gravel!

Benefits of Gravel Mulch:

·         Effectively reduce maintenance needs by inhibiting weed growth and improving soil conditions.
·         Two or three inches of gravel over the soil limits moisture evaporation by as much as twenty-five percent.
·         Reduces water runoff and soil erosion — a must for sloping gardens.
·         It does not have to be replaced every year unlike organic mulches such as pine straw, wood chips and lawn clippings will decompose into the soil.
If colors are matched properly with the design and color profile of the gardens , a uniform sea of white-silver gravel, accenting rich reddish-brown trees and deep purple foliage will make a beautiful site.

Gravel is great for a pristine, easy to maintain ground cover, which has an organic look and feel.  Gravel is effective at retaining heat from the sun. Water flows pretty quickly through gravel getting right to the ground.
